On July 1st 2007, England introduced a new law to make virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England smokefree.
The Bingo Association announced a few days ago that the smoking ban in Scotland is having a stronger impact on the country’s bingo industry than anticipated.
In the few months since the ban’s implementation, revenues at all bingo clubs have been hit hard, as bingo players arrive later and leave earlier. Operators have reported a 17-26 per cent decline and five clubs have already closed. Scotland’s independent bingo clubs have suffered the greatest pressure.
Traditional Bingo Halls have closed already in England as well. Such is the case of Bingorama club in historic Belper, Derbyshire. The old club was forced to close down after 37 years in business. The Bingorama club’s operator, Stylus Sports, puts the closure down to a number of current industry-wide pressures. Being the strongest ones the smoking ban and high taxation.
