Fight for Access to US Online Gambling Market
After being disappointed by the World Trade Organization (WTO) online gambling settlement between the United States (US) and the European Union (EU), the Remote Gaming Association (RGA) filed a formal complaint against the US for its discriminatory practices.
Referring to reiterated rulings by the World Trade Organization that the US violated WTO treaties as well as passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) by the USA, the RGA says that the US Department of Justice violated international trade law by «kicking their members out» of the market and then immediately taking legal action against offshore operators while allowing domestic online gambling companies to continue operating normally.
The Department of Justice has subsequently threatened, arrested and carried out legal action against European firms and their representatives.
«How would US investors and businessmen feel if they invested in a business in the UK based on international law commitments, and then suddenly the UK not only passed new laws forcing them to shut down their business but tried to throw them in jail for past activities, while still allowing their domestic competitors to continue on doing the same thing?» commented the chief executive of the RGA Clive Hawkswood.
